Final of the ecological education project “Children Protect the Environment – Children-Friendly Environment, Pruszków 2014”

The final summarized the pilot project and the actual project (Follow up) under the same name – Children Protect the Environment. Both projects were completed in 2014 in Pruszków by AURAEKO BATERPAK Organization of Packaging Recovery SA and AURAEKO Organization of Recovery of Electric and Electronic Equipment SA, in cooperation with 14 municipal kindergartens and environmental safety and education departments at the Pruszków City Office. The projects were sponsored by the Mayor of the City of Pruszków. We have already informed you about the project’s goals twice. Now it is time to summarize the results of the annual competition.

The goal of the project was:

1. Familiarizing the children with the term “ENVIRONMENT” and with a relationship between peoples’ activity and the environment, with particular emphasis on the threats to the environment and human health coming from the used batteries and electric and electronic equipment.

2. Familiarizing the children with the term USED BATTERIES AND USED ELECTRIC AND ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENT, as well as with methods to reduce the threats to themselves, their families and the environment.

3. Learning to play and work in a group of peers and in cooperation with adults.

The foregoing three goals were completed by kindergarten teachers. They have put a lot of effort into this project, using topic-related materials supplied by AURAEKO, including 3 500 leaflets and 1 700 sheets with information about the project for the parents. Kindergarten teachers deserve our respect and appreciation for organizing educational classes for the children.

The fourth goal was as follows:

4. Significant decrease in the number of used batteries in the municipal waste by engaging children in protecting the environment (domestic, peer, local).

This goal was achieved by collecting the used batteries. All the children, their parents, families, friends and almost all employees of the 14 kindergartens, including their principals took part in this stage of the project. It is not easy to collect two tons of used batteries, but when everyone helps nothing’s impossible. AURAEKO exchanged all the collected used batteries for almost 700 ecological shopping bags.

Children gained the knowledge and by collecting the used batteries along with their parents they collected 1 840 kg of them, which is very important if you consider the fact that one small button cell battery, used in electronic watches may pollute 1 m3 of water or soil. The collected batteries will be utilized and will no longer pollute the earth, air or water.

“Let’s use our imagination! This amount of batteries (almost two tons) is enough to pollute the entire Pruszków area! Let’s say it out loud – if in the future in the Pruszków area there will be less deaths caused by cancer or other diseases, this is also because of projects like this. This is all thanks to the children, parents, kindergarten teachers, Mayor of Pruszków and the City Office. AURAEKO and MEDIA1 were also an invaluable help” – said the President of AURAEKO Management Board Gabriela Leszczyńska.

Proper waste management, particularly the management of used batteries and electric and electronic equipment translates into a decrease in mortality. This is obvious because health is not brought by polluted air, earth or water.

The project’s final helped to summarize its achievements, i.e. completion of the set goals, but it also engaged people of Pruszków to look for ways to decrease the negative influence of used equipment and batteries on our environment and the citizens. This is probably just a drop in the ocean but if you add this drop to other initiatives, which have already taken place and to those, which are organized in Pruszków permanently (collection of used electric and electronic equipment and batteries, participation in local and national competitions), it may turn out that this is not a drop anymore but a wave. Such actions should be repeated and intensified. This was the declaration of the City Mayor and the representatives of the Environmental Safety and Education Departments.

During the final the results of the collection were announced.

The first place was awarded to the Municipal Kindergarten No 3, which collected 370 kg of used batteries (3,43 battery per person). AURAEKO awarded them with a multi-functional device by Brother – xerox copy, colour printer and a scanner.
The second place was awarded to the Municipal Kindergarten No 12, which collected 340 kg of used batteries (3,15 battery per person). W AURAEKO awarded them with a Philips projector.
The third place was awarded to the Municipal Kindergarten No 14, which collected 215 kg of used batteries (2,09 battery per person). AURAEKO awarded them with a mobile sound system with an MP3 player and port, as well as with an active column with Behringer mixer.
The fourth place was awarded to the Municipal Kindergarten No 8, which collected 164 kg of used batteries (1,21 battery per person). They were awarded with a Philips mini sound system, founded by the Mayor of Pruszków
The fifth place was awarded to the Municipal Kindergarten No 2, which collected 121 kg of used batteries (1,12 battery per person). They were awarded with a Panasonic mini sound system, founded by the Mayor of Pruszków.
The Municipal Kindergarten No 13 was awarded a distinction– they got a set of playing blocks, founded by the Mayor of Pruszków.
All the other kindergartens participating in the competition were awarded with a set of wooden blocks, founded by the Mayor of Pruszków.

During the final the children acted a scene from the Polish movie “Nie ma Mocnych”, which was adapted to the current issue of how the used electric and electronic equipment, as well as the used batteries influence our environment. This wonderful show with a proper scenography and music is a great way to promote proecological behaviour not only among children but among all citizens of Pruszków. It may be assumed that the project was supported by about 5 000 citizens of Pruszków, including about 1 700 children. We hope that next projects will gather even more people. See our gallery for pictures from the final. It’s quite a view.
